Piercing Aftercare

SUGGESTED CLEANING SOLUTIONS

For body piercings:

- Prepackaged sterile saline solution with no additives, OR a homemade saline solution made by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of iodine-free sea salt into one cup (8 fl.oz.) of warm distilled or bottled water (to be used as a soak or a rinse)

- Mild, fragrance-free liquid soap — preferably anti-microbial or germicidal

For oral piercings:

- Mild oral antiseptic or alcohol-free mouthwash, such as Biotene

- If alcohol-free is not available, dilute Listerine 4-to-1 with distilled water

Saline soaks are the preferred aftercare. If done daily, healing time is typically cut in half. Whichever cleaning method is best for you, clean your piercing morning, night, and midday if you feel it necessary. You may mix and match these instructions, but do not do them all back-to-back! Most importantly, never pick off any scabs or residue around the piercing. Piercing “crusties” will wash off when they’re ready.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BODY PIERCINGS:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning or touching your piercing.

2A. Saline Soak — Soak your piercing for five to ten minutes, once or more daily. Cold soaks can be soothing for the first few cleanings, but when it’s comfortable to use warm saline, warm (just under hot) is best. Fill a medicine cup with saline and invert the cup over the piercing to form a vacuum. For tricky locations, a cotton ball soaked in saline may be easier. Saturate a cotton swab with saline and gently cleanse the area around the piercing, being careful not to turn or rotate the jewelry. OR if you’re short on time, a cotton swab saturated with saline works great for a quick rinse.

2B. Step 2 Variation — Soap — If soap must be used, limit use to once or twice daily. Lather a pearl-sized drop of soap with water to clean the jewelry and surrounding area, then rinse thoroughly. Do not leave soap on your piercing for more than 30 seconds, or rotate soapy jewelry through your piercing!
Gently wipe away any loose residue, then pat dry with a single-use towel, or air-dry.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORAL PIERCINGS:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning or touching your piercing.

2. Swish — For the inside of your mouth, rinse gently with mouthwash after food or drinks.

For the outside of your mouth, follow the Body Piercing instructions above.

- Saline soaks can be done for oral piercings. For internal soaks, hold a mouthful of the homemade saline solution for a total of five to ten minutes; for external soaks, a medicine cup of the solution works best. Do this soak for one or more of your cleanings per day to speed up your healing.

- For the first week of healing for all oral piercings, do not use straws, and avoid hot food and drinks, chewy foods, and excessive taking. Do NOT smoke.

For all fresh piercings, you can minimize swelling by limiting motion and using a cold compress. Be patient, piercings take months to heal completely. Please call 215-441-5122, text 484-466-6437, or email PiercingsByAmanda@gmail.com if you have any questions. Enjoy your piercing!
